Nigerian Students' Society

This grant enabled us to host our first cultural-themed event, and we hope that it will grow to become a staple event that we host in collaboration with the SRC in celebration of Black History Month.
– Deborah Osomo (NSS, 2025-26 President)
Type of Grant

Big Ideas (2025-26)

What the Grant Supported

Funding enabled the Nigerian Students’ Society (NSS) to deliver its first Green and White Cultural Mixer during Black History Month. The grant covered venue hire, catering and decorations, allowing tickets to remain free for students. More than 60 students attended the event, which combined cultural celebration with community building and “created a shared sense of pride in the Nigerian and other featured African cultural heritages through food, karaoke and other activities.”

Long-Term Impacts
  • The event generated valuable social media content that increased visibility and engagement for NSS.
  • Membership interest grew, with five new members joining following the mixer.
  • The event also led to new collaborations with affiliated societies, increased interest in office bearer elections.
  • The mixer strengthened connections between new and returning students, as well as between Nigerian students and students from other African countries.
Inclusivity & Accessibility

“Receiving this grant enabled us to welcome and entertain students from the wider UofG community, ensuring there was enough refreshments to go around. We had participation from Nigerian, Kenyan, South African and Scottish students because we marketed the event as a welcome atmosphere for all who were interested through the SRC platform and through our social media. We also had a uniquely large number of tickets purchased from Chinese students and we hope to catch more of them at our upcoming events. All who attended had a great time and felt included.”

Lessons Learned

“Through the procurement of this grant and the planning of this event, we learned how beneficial it was to only use the SRC website to sell our tickets. We learned from the last grant-sponsored event how necessary it was to ensure the tracking of our event tickets was easy for the SRC team to view and it also helped us discover how to help our alumni purchase tickets from the SRC platform for events. We also learned how important it was to have booking receipts and invoices readily available as that enabled us to pay for our refreshments in good time.”

Additional SRC Support Provided
  • Met with the SRC Clubs Team ahead of applying for the grant to receive advice on event planning and the application process.
  • Borrowed a Bluetooth speaker and PA system through the SRC Lending Library to support event delivery.
  • Secured an SRC Club Spotlight and took over the SRC’s Instagram account on the day of the event, helping to increase publicity and promote society membership.
  • Worked closely with SRC staff to identify and secure a suitable on-campus venue for the event.
Would Your Society Apply for an SRC Grant Again?

“Yes. We have come to appreciate collaborating with the SRC to host unique events that we know will serve our membership and the wider UofG student community. We look forward to applying for more grants in the future. We are continuously hopeful that our events connect with the overall vision of the SRC pertaining to student growth as well as the empowerment of our members.”
