Medical Research Society

The goals for this year are to increase membership, host more events and increase awareness of medical research and presentations. This grant has helped us do all three; host a conference, increase membership and build awareness for research opportunities.
 - Riva Cheng (2025-26 President, Medical Research Society)

Type of Grant

Big Ideas (2025-26)

What the Grant Supported

The Big Ideas grant supported the 14th National Undergraduate Research Conference hosted by the Glasgow University Medical Research Society by subsidising UofG student ticket costs and contributing to workshop materials, enabling a full-day programme of expert talks, student presentations, workshops and networking for 42 attendees while making the event more affordable and accessible. The grant supported the student community to present research projects and inspire research output.

Long-Term Impacts
  • Increased awareness of the importance of medical research and the society's activities, supporting ongoing academic engagement.
  • Strengthened the foundation for running the conference annually and promoting sustained interest in research within medicine.
  • Contributed to increased society membership and participation in events.

Inclusivity & Accessibility

“We have been able to offer a very discounted ticket price for students which makes research a far more inclusive and accessible experience for students. This allows students to attend research conferences, ask questions and learn more about academic medicine.”

Lessons Learned

“In the process of applying for this grant, we learnt the importance of keeping files and receipts and how to run a conference and apply to grants.”

Additional SRC Support Provided
  • Sold event tickets via the SRC websitre to ensure accessible and centralised booking.
  • Booked the Gilchrist Postgraduate Club through the SRC for event delivery.
  • Borrowed poster boards from the SRC's Lending Library to support display of student research posters.

Would Your Society Apply for an SRC Grant Again

“We would consider applying for additional grants and support in the future to further our academic medicine goals.”
