African Caribbean Society

The workshop allowed our members to have an opportunity to learn a skill that is inherent to African and Caribbean culture while being able to be trained by professionals. It also allowed an opportunity for members to get to know each other in an environment where embraces and encourages their culture. - Paris Babs (2024-25 Treasurer, ACS)

Club Grant (2024-25)

What the Grant Supported

Club Grant funding facilitated the delivery of the hair braiding workshop by covering the costs required to provide members with professional-led training and access to the materials needed for the activity. This allowed students to learn a skill rooted in African and Caribbean culture while creating a welcoming space for members to connect, celebrate their heritage, and engage with one another.

Long-Term Impacts
  • Provided members with the opportunity to learn a skill rooted in African and Caribbean culture through professional training.
  • Created a welcoming environment for members to connect, celebrate their culture, and strengthen community bonds.
  • Allowed committee members to engage more closely with members, gathering feedback and ideas for future events.
  • Enabled the society to share African and Caribbean culture with the wider student body, promoting intercultural learning and appreciation.
Inclusivity & Accessibility

“This year our main objective was to give our members the opportunity to participate in events that are both relevant and representative to African and Caribbean culture. By obtaining this grant, we were able to make the learning of braiding and cornrowing more accessible to our members and were able to invest in the best resources (outsourcing professionals) to deliver the best experience."

Lessons Learned

"One key lesson that we learned when applying for this grant is that it is best to plan far in ahead for an event that requires a grant and to prepare for unexpected costs and conditions i.e. the storm, to arise."

Additional SRC Support Provided
  • Met with the SRC Clubs Team ahead of applying for the grant to receive advice on event planning and the application process.
  • Secured an SRC Club Spotlight and took over the SRC’s Instagram account on the day of the event, helping to increase publicity and promote society membership.
  • Worked closely with SRC staff to identify and secure a suitable on-campus venue for the event.
  • Borrowed equipment from the SRC Lending Library to support presentations and activities during the event.
Would Your Society Apply for an SRC Grant Again?

"Yes, it was very helpful and allowed us to have the freedom to plan for future events without worrying about being in a cash deficit."
