We’ve put together some information to get you started. It is also available in leaflet form here: Fearless Flathunting and 10 Tips to Avoid Housing Scams. If you find you need more help, or if you just want to chat things through before you make a decision then please contact The Advice Centre.

Please note, you might sometimes see adverts for private accommodation appearing on the SRC website, including our advice webpages.  These are simply adverts, paid for by the provider – the SRC Advice Centre does not endorse or promote any particular accommodation provider.  If you need advice regarding a tenancy with any provider, please don’t hesitate to contact us

  • Avoiding Housing Scams Unfortunately some accommodation adverts are scams, protect yourself by following our check list before handing over money!
  • Deposits Since 2012 landlords in Scotland legally have to register your tenancy deposit with a tenancy deposit scheme.
  • Emergency Accommodation If you find yourself suddenly homeless, or circumstances mean that you are unable to access your own accommodation, for any reason, read on.
  • Fearless Flathunting Finding accommodation is not always easy, we’ve got some tips on where to look, where to stay and what to keep an eye out for when you go flat viewing.
  • Fuel Bills & Utilities If you are living in private rented accommodation it’s likely you’ll have fuel bills to pay, separately from your rent.
  • Guarantors Before they’ll agree to let a property to a student, some landlords or letting agents will ask you to provide a 3rd party to act as a guarantor.
  • Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) A House in Multiple Occupation is a property where three or more unrelated people live, using shared facilities. To find out more on HMOs, read on.
  • Leaving Early & Sub-letting If you’re leaving a tenancy earlier than planned, you might need to get someone else to take your place.
  • Leaving Purpose Built Student Accommodation during COVID-19 The Coronavirus (Scotland) (No2) Act 2020 gives you the right to end your tenancy, or cancel your tenancy if you have not yet moved in.
  • Making an Inventory An inventory is a list of what items have been supplied with your rented flat, and what condition the flat and the furniture, décor and other items are in.
  • Moving Out Moving out of your flat at the end of your lease can be a busy and stressful time, especially when you are faced with getting rid of a pile of unwanted belongings.
  • Repairs Something wrong with your new flat? Do you know what your landlord’s responsibilities are?
  • TV Licensing Questions about your TV licence? We’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions for you.
  • Unfair Terms & Fees At the SRC Advice Centre we see many different tenancy agreements, each with their own unique terms.
