The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day (learn more about the history of the campaign here).

This year, the SRC is building on the momentum of our ongoing Together Against GBV campaign to focus on concrete actions that challenge the culture of gender-based violence. We're placing a special emphasis on:

  • Gender-Based Violence in Student Groups: Addressing the culture that can cause instances of sexism, harassment, and assault within our communities.
  • LGBTQ+ Inclusion: Ensuring our campaign is inclusive of all genders and sexualities, recognising the diverse forms of violence experienced by LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Supporting Feminist City Planning: Advocating for urban planning and design that prioritises the safety and needs of women and girls.

White Ribbon Campaign

The White Ribbon is the international symbol of anti-violence against women and girls. In wearing these, or tying them up around the campus, we show to the world our commitment to ending gender-based violence. White ribbons will be available for collection (both as lapel pins and lengths of ribbon to tie) from SRC and GUSA events during the 16 days, as well as at the SRC Welcome Point.

Together Against GBV

Following the release of the Morag Ross Report in December 2022, we worked with the University to develop an awareness raising campaign called Together Against GBV which is set to launch during 16 Days.

The aim of the campaign is to educate both staff and students about GBV and its various definitions and forms, and raise awareness of the support that's available both on campus and outside of the University. Together Against GBV is our ongoing commitment to:

  • Educate: Raise awareness of what constitutes GBV and its impact.
  • Empower: Equip students with the knowledge and skills to challenge harmful behaviours.
  • Support: Ensure survivors have access to the resources they need.

Throughout the development of the campaign, we have maintained that the student voice is central to its success. We believe that students deserve to feel safe, supported, and represented in all discussions surrounding GBV on our campus. To ensure that this campaign reflects the views and priorities of UofG students, we have consulted with all four student bodies and a variety of clubs and societies.

Our 23-24 President, Hailie, has said: “We endorse and support this campaign whilst recognising that the University still has a lot of work to do to rebuild trust in its approach to GBV. The SRC will continue to hold the University accountable, ensuring the student voice is heard and GBV support is further improved.”
