GUSRC is now accepting applications for the next Editor(s)-in-Chief of The Glasgow Guardian — the University of Glasgow’s award-winning student newspaper.

We’re seeking two committed, collaborative, and capable University of Glasgow students to take the lead from July 2025 to June 2026.

If you’re passionate about journalism, ready to take on editorial responsibility, and keen to guide a team through a full publishing year, this could be your next challenge.

  • Location: University of Glasgow
  • Term: July 2025 – June 2026 (renewable)
  • Open to: University of Glasgow students only (UG or PGT/PGR)
  • Team up: Joint applications encouraged (two roles available)
  • Pay: Voluntary

Applications close: Midnight, Friday 31 May 2025

About the Role

As Editor-in-Chief, you’ll take on a central role in running The Glasgow Guardian. You’ll work closely with your co-editor and a volunteer editorial team to publish six print issues during the academic year, while also maintaining the paper’s digital output and reputation for quality student journalism.

You’ll coordinate a mix of print and digital content — from news and features to opinion, reviews and interviews — while supporting contributors, managing deadlines, and upholding high editorial standards.

Whether you’re an experienced student journalist or a strong writer and team leader with an interest in media, this is a unique opportunity to gain leadership and editorial experience in a real-world setting.

Responsibilities

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Editorial Direction: Shaping the newspaper’s content and values, and ensuring coverage is accurate, fair, and relevant

  • Team Leadership: Recruiting and supporting a diverse team of student writers, editors, and creatives

  • Content Production: Overseeing print and digital publishing schedules, editing work, and managing layout, design, and proofreading

  • Digital Strategy: Enhancing the paper’s online presence and engaging readers via social media and multimedia

  • Financial Sustainanility: Monitor The Glasgow Guardian’s annual budget and raise funds to support print and running costs.

  • Governance & Ethics: Ensuring all content meets legal and ethical standards while maintaining editorial independence

We're Looking for Someone Who:

  • Has strong writing and editing skills (journalism or creative writing experience welcome)

  • Can lead a team with confidence, fairness, and flexibility

  • Understands media ethics and responsible reporting

  • Is organised, proactive, and committed to high-quality student journalism

  • Values inclusion, diverse perspectives, and collaborative working

What You’ll Gain

  • Real editorial and leadership experience

  • Support from GUSRC, including media law and editorial training

  • Opportunities to attend conferences and apply for awards

  • A platform to make an impact and shape campus conversation
