Iris Duane

Hi! I’m Iris (She/Her), a Politics & Policy student who is hoping to be your next Vice-President Student Support!

Having experienced UofG as working class disabled student of colour, I understand many of the challenges faced by students whilst accessing higher education; if elected as your next VP-SS, I will work tirelessly to eliminate these barriers and promote an inclusive and effective campus for all students!

My experience:

  • QMU Vice-President of Membership, Clubs and Societies: working across a wide portfolio, from organising freshers’ week, to assisting clubs and societies, and helping with campaigning; further aiding in organising observance events such as Black history month and Trans day of remembrance.
  • Co-President of the Politics Society.
  • Welfare Officer of the Raising and Giving Society.
  • One of the Young-Women’s Movement 30 women under 30.

My Promises to you:

  • I will continue to stand against the continual defunding of the student experience. Working across campus, I will lobby the University to increase the funding in the student experience and associated projects, putting students first.
  • I will prioritise a holistic approach to gender-based-violence, working with the VP-SA to ensure that all executives of societies receive active bystander training. I will further advocate for the adoption of the Emily test charter, ensuring that every member of university staff is trained to above a baseline level in order combat and prevent GBV.
  • The financial support at UofG falls far short of the mark. I will push for significantly increased financial support, pushing for a lowered threshold of access to the hardship fund as well as the creation of new financial aid schemes to combat the cost-of-living crisis. I will further work to eliminate hidden costs in accessing education for both current and prospective students.
  • I will work with stakeholders across campus and the University to develop a harm reduction network, highlighting resources, lobbying for drug testing kits on campus and ensuring a student first approach is employed towards drugs usage.
  • I will continue to stand against the investment in arms by the University, and tirelessly fight for an ethical framework for investment that invests back into the students, not war.
  • I will fight for an expansion of mental health support that recognises the mental health crisis students facing students, and further promote an intersectional approach towards mental health provision.
  • I will endeavour to tackle student loneliness, working with the VP-SA to increase student engagement and institute a regime of welfare-orientated events across the entire year.
  • I will stand for all student tenancies, lobbying against the disproportionate rises in costs for accommodation and developing a framework to support private tenants.
  • It’s time we stop oversubscribing students and cap student numbers, if elected I will ensure this campaign continues and that a new deal for all students is achieved.

UofG needs to work for all students. If I am elected as your next VP-SS I will ensure that this is the case.

This election vote for a new deal for students, Vote for Iris Duane!
