Jannat Afzal

Hi! I’m Jannat Afzal, a 3rd year Neuroscience student. I’m running to be your General Representative because I care about making the University a place where every student feels listened to and valued. I know firsthand, the importance of community through participating in clubs and societies and being SRC Team Leader for Welcome Helping this year!

My priorities include:

  • Everyone deserves access to support. I’ll improve services and expand wellbeing initiatives, making help easier to find. Your wellbeing is important so no matter your background, you feel at home.
  • As an ethnic minority student, I understand how vital it is to feel represented and supported.
  • Education must come before politics. I’ll fight for transparency on tuition and funds so money benefits your learning. I’ll also push for financial guidance, support with the rising cost of living, and better access to opportunities. Universities should open doors, not close them!
  • I stand with students calling for divestment from organisations that conflict with our values. Glasgow must reflect the principles its students care about.

University is more than lectures; it’s about creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone!

Abdulrahman Al Ansari

My name is Abdulrahman Al Ansari. I’m a 2nd year business management student running for general representative. I’m dedicated to further developing the buddy system and pushing new students to interact with one another, building their roots.

I am from Qatar, but I have moved around a lot switching schools multiple times between 4 countries. So, if anyone knows what's it's like to be a new student it's me. I deeply understand the challenges of being a new student, such as isolation, conforming, disoriented, and even battling the concept of self-worth. These experiences have shaped my empathy and adaptability - qualities I will bring to this role. I aim to ease students’ academic and social transitions by improving access to resources and prioritizing support systems.

This year, I had the opportunity to volunteer as a SRC Welcome Week Helper, which showed me how impactful volunteering is on a larger scale. While I’ve previously volunteered in smaller settings with societies and organizations, the SRC Helper position helped me become more organized and diligent. Further qualities I will carry into the General Representative position. Above all, I’m passionate about helping students build self-confidence and feel truly integrated into our university.

Aditya Dineshbhai Vyas

“It’s not about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”

– Rocky Balboa.

This philosophy from the legendary film series Rocky, truly defines my ethics in terms of approaching challenges, leadership and the essence of teamwork. I am Aditya Vyas, contesting for the position of General Representative, and I am here to ensure that not a single student voice is ever unheard or unacted upon.

My experiences as a sports scientist, student leader and event organizer have instilled in me the values of honesty, collaboration, patience and resilience. Starting as an Assistant Sports Secretary during my bachelor's to serving as Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach of Mumbai City FC during their unforgettable League winning spell, I have closely viewed the power of unity and preparation in transforming a community.

As your General Representative, I will:

  • Plan inclusive educational, cultural and sporting activities to get students more engaged.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyle choices that help students find the appropriate balance between school and health.
  • Foster relationships and diversity among student groups.
  • Facilitate communication between administration and students, ensuring openness and accountability.

Like any great team, University of Glasgow thrives when every involved individual plays their part. In collaboration with one another, we can build a campus that is inclusive, dynamic and unyielding.

Sarah Felkner

My name is Sarah Lakshmi, I’m a second year chemistry major, and I’m running to be one of your general representatives this year!

Some key issues I want to address include:

  • Integration
    • As an international student, I understand how overwhelming and confusing the transition to university life can be. As general representative, I will work with the SRC and the university to bring awareness to the several resources currently available to students. I will also encourage the creation of events to promote the wellbeing of students settling into university life in Scotland.
  • Financial Aid
    •  Balancing course, accommodation, and living costs while being a full time student is difficult, as general representative I promise to you that I will advocate for more scholarship and funding opportunities for students from all walks of life.
  • Communication and Transparency
    • As a representative, I intend to promote the financial and emotional welfare of all UofG students. I will ensure this by maintaining active communication between students and the university, ensuring that your thoughts and concerns are heard.

Thank you for reading my manifesto! If you have any further questions, feel free to email me at 3075140F@student.gla.ac.uk

Bushra Hamwi

Starting university is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. As a possible General Representative, I want to make sure no one has to navigate this journey alone. I am Bushra Hamwi, and as a new student, I know firsthand how important community and support are during student life.

I am approachable, and a good listener. My goal is to be someone you feel comfortable coming to with your concerns, and ideas, no matter how big or small. I will make sure your voice is heard and that our collective experiences shape a better year for us all, no matter at what stage you are in university.

I want to push for a more open communication between students and staff, improve access to all kind of support, and create opportunities for us to connect outside of lectures. Whether it’s through events, feedback, or simply being there for you, I will work to build a stronger, more supportive environment where we can all thrive and enjoy this amazing experience.

I believe representation isn’t about speaking for people, it’s about listening to them and amplifying their voices. Let’s make this year not just about studying, but about building a community together.

Zeynep (Zey) Kilic

Hi everyone! I’m Zeynep Kilic (Zey), a second-year Common Law student running to be your General Representative!  ✨ I want every student at Glasgow to feel heard, supported, and connected, and to see their ideas turn into action!

Why Me?
I’ve been actively involved on campus as Chair of my school’s Student Council, Secretary of the Corporate Law Society, and through pro bono and volunteering initiatives. These experiences have taught me how to listen, collaborate, and turn ideas into action, skills I want to bring to the SRC.

What I Will Do If Elected
I will strengthen student voice by creating clear channels for feedback, ensuring concerns about teaching, assessments, and campus life are raised and acted on. Micro-mentorship circles will connect students across years and schools for guidance and support.

I’ll advocate for better study spaces, promote wellbeing services, and encourage inclusive cross-society events. A digital Student Voice Wall and QR-code stations will let students post suggestions and vote on priorities in real-time.

I’ll support creative, collaborative, and sustainable initiatives, from society mashups to eco-friendly campaigns - making campus life fun, connected, and meaningful.

Glasgow should feel like home for every student - supported, included, and celebrated.

#GoWithZey 🌟

Rosie Liu

Hi folks, I’m Rosie Liu. I started as a Social Science student but soon found myself drawn to other fields. The long and complicated process of transferring to my current double major in the College of Arts showed me just how challenging it can be to track down information and to put it into practice.

That’s exactly why I’m running for General Representative. I believe effectiveness shouldn’t be a mystery. Students deserve a clear voice. This year alone, I’ve already helped three students successfully resolve their issues, which has strengthened my conviction that our university must do better at providing accessible information.

If elected, I will turn this belief into action through three concrete initiatives:

First, I’ll launch a Curriculum Feedback Express. By systematically collecting feedback on courses and raising it directly with course coordinators, I’ll ensure that problems are addressed during the semester.

Second, I’ll build a Transparent Communication Bridge. Through monthly updates, I’ll share both my progress and key developments via email, keeping myself fully transparent and accountable to everyone I represent.

Third, I’ll cultivate a More Cohesive Community. I plan to host interdisciplinary salons, giving students more opportunities to exchange ideas and connect with like-minded peers.

Tal Sooben

Hi! I’m Taleivi Sooben, a second-year Mechanical Engineering student and I am running for General Representative.

University life can be amazing but it can also be a bit chaotic. From juggling deadlines to trying to find a study space during exams (seriously it is like the Hunger Games), I want to make sure all students have the support they need to get the most out of their time at Glasgow.

This year, I helped out as a Welcome Week Helper so I am familiar with what makes students feel welcome and included. I would love to continue supporting events, campaigns and initiatives that make university life easier and more enjoyable for everyone. For example, I would tackle the “ghost students” issue where study spaces are left empty with only belongings by introducing a kind of “jail” for unattended items, so everyone can find a seat more easily especially during exam season.

I am passionate about student welfare, better study spaces and making sure SRC events and campaigns are inclusive and accessible to everyone.

And just for fun one of my main priorities will be to try to convince the SRC to get a dog as a mascot that could also double as an emotional support pet for everyone! (one can dream).

Laura Thompson

My name is Laura (she/her), and I would love to be elected as your General Representative! I’ve spent two wonderful years as a School Representative, but now I’m seeking your vote for Gen Rep to champion causes such as:

  1. The implementation of the Emily Test Charter

As previous President of Glasgow Students for Choice society, and a founding member of the FemCollab, I believe committing to the Emily Test Charter is the best course of action that UofG can take to tackle GBV on campus and in our community.

  1. Ethical use of Artificial Intelligence

AI is an increasingly unavoidable presence in our digital world, but there are serious concerns over its environmental and social impacts. The implementation of AI in teaching and assessment must be ethical and sustainable.

  1. Staff-student society partnerships

These partnerships give staff insight into student issues and provide societies with more resources to run their events with - it would be great to see them across the University.

My previous experience working on the SRC, amongst student societies, and on the ground of student activist movements has more than prepared me to be your next Gen Rep.

#InThompsonWeTrust – vote Laura #1 for Gen Rep!

Fangning Yu

Hi, I'm Fangning Yu, a third-year student in Life Sciences and a 2025 Welcome Helper. I’m running for General Representative.

What I want to do is simple:

• Study spaces: open extra seats during exam weeks and turn empty classrooms into pop-up study rooms.

• Careers: run school-specific summer-internship briefings and small peer sharing sessions.

• Food: work with catering and vending to offer friendlier prices and wider choices.

• Housing: refresh roommate/room-hunt channels, compile on-/off-campus options and watchouts, and signpost to advice.

I aim to be a reliable bridge between students and the University—ensuring that every voice is heard and that small, practical fixes are implemented.

More seats, more choices, more chances. Please vote for Fangning Yu — General Rep.
