About

Opera society's aim is to make opera accessible for students both to perform and experience as an audience.

During the academic year, we rehearse on campus on Wednesday evenings. We perform a winter concert at the end of semester 1 which consists of chorus scenes as well as solo arias and duets. This concert is a great performance opportunity in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere!

Our full production takes place in semester 2, and is always sung in English. Previous productions include:

  • La Sonnambula (2024)
  • Orpheus and Eurydice/Savitri (double bill, 2023)
  • Lucia di Lammermoor (2022)
  • Dido and Aeneas/Timon of Athens (double bill, 2019)
  • Venus and Adonis (2018)

We welcome all singers, whether you're just starting out singing, you're an experienced singer or just wanting to try something new! Many of our members have never sung in an opera when they first join us.

Opera society also provides opportunities for musical directors, artistic directors and stage managers as well as various production roles. We are very keen to hear from those interested in directing and production roles.
