About Us

Did you attend the climate protests of 2021 and then get distracted by uni life after first year? We did too! Glasgow University Solar is built for students of any degree to jump back into the world of renewable energy and turn passion into real, practical change.

Whether STEM or non-STEM, GUSS gives you the platform to apply your unique background to the clean energy transition:

  • Physicists & Scientists: Lead the research, testing, and simulation of various solar cell chemistries, advanced PV materials, and battery storage technologies.
  • Engineers: Configure individual solar cells into working arrays while specifying the power inverters, voltage regulators, and adapters needed for our hands-on projects.
  • Non-STEM: Drive crucial non-technical aspects, exploring global energy policy, climate politics, economics, public policy, and grant/project funding opportunities.

Plans for the Year

Solar for Sub-Sahara

This academic year, our practical focus shifts toward Sub-Saharan Africa—a region where solar imports are surging, yet critical gaps in maintenance, workforce training, and hardware repair remain. Through our strategic partnership with SolarAid, we directly connect student initiative with off-grid energy access:

  • E-Waste & Teardown Hackathons: Practical workshops disassembling hardware like the D.LIGHT S3 to master component-level repair and circular electronics.
  • Guest Speakers: Educational talks featuring international development experts, clean energy leaders, and SolarAid representatives.
  • Fundraising "SolarAid Days": campus events and workshops to directly support solar deployment in off-grid African communities.

Solar for the UK

We aren't just looking abroad—we are putting PV tech to work right here at home through hands-on local initiatives:

  • UK Expeditions & Site Visits: Field trips to local solar farms, renewable sites, and industry hubs.
  • Networking Events: Connections with industry professionals, research labs, and green-tech recruiters.
  • Plug-in Solar & Simulations: Rigorous software modelling combined with real-world testing of plug-in solar hardware.
  • Fun Projects: Creative hands-on experiments, including building solar-powered ovens and solar baking days on campus.
  • PV Retrofits: having some fun in the lab Retrofitting everyday electronics like office equipment with solar components to make them fully PV-powered.

Pub

If you're just here to grab a drink in a sunny beer garden when the Scottish weather allows, that’s more than enough for us. Everyone is welcome—come join the movement!
