The Students’ Representative Council is disappointed to learn that, without consultation, the University has joined the Defence Universities Alliance (DUA).

By joining the Alliance, the University is deepening its ties with the Ministry of Defence and the arms industry, further embedding military priorities within research, education and graduate career pathways. The decision to join the Alliance provides yet another example of the continued contempt for student views on the University’s relationship with the arms and defence sector.

As a decision impacting all students, we are deeply concerned that there was no discussion or dialogue with the SRC, as the representative body of the students.

We will urgently seek disclosure of the University’s application, decision-making process and proposed activities. The SRC expects meaningful student consultation, transparent ethical oversight and clear protections for academic freedom, student choice, privacy and lawful protest.

We will keep students updated as further information becomes available and as our discussions with the University progress.

Yours,

Molly, Ben, Hannah and Natasha
SRC Executive 2026–27
