Join us for a walk up the Arrochar Alps, famous for their rocky peaks, on Sunday 26th March! We have two route options: The Cobbler or Beinn Ìme.
Before signing up, you must read the following information:
You will be asked to specify which route you would like to take: both of these routes are challenging and of a moderate-high technical difficulty, so only sign up if you have previously done walks over rugged, boggy, and steep terrain and of this distance and ascent. To ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment, we want all participants to have previous experience of hiking/hillwalking.
Please read the following descriptions and think carefully about which walk you will be able to complete; carefully consider if you are currently able to walk these distances and ascents through hilly and rocky terrain for up to 2 hours without a break.
The Cobbler is a popular summit with great views of the surrounding Alps. It has more accessible paths but still has sections that are very rocky and steep. This walk is 11 km / 7 miles and is expected to take 5-6 hours. It has an ascent of 920 m - this is taller than any of our previous walks this year, so only sign up if you are sure that you will be able to complete this route.
Beinn Ìme is a more challenging walk than the Cobbler, with a taller ascent of 1021 m. This walk is 16 km / 10 miles and is expected to take 6-7 hours. Please only chose this option if you have an excellent fitness level and hiking experience on Scottish munros or other high peaks.
The start of these routes is the same, so we will travel together, but the two groups will splinter off in different directions towards different peaks. If you are still unsure about what is required for these routes, please ask us via email or social media!
If the weather and/or ground conditions on the day of the walk are bad (for example, if there is ice), we will do a walk of lower altitude and with less challenging terrain in the same area instead. This would be for everyone’s safety.
These routes include rough terrain and very steep sections, so you need to wear suitable hiking boots. You also need to wear warm enough clothing and a waterproof coat or jacket, and bring any supplies you need, including water and snacks! Please note that if you come to the meet-up with insufficient equipment, you will not be allowed to come on the walk. Insufficient equipment means increasing the risk of injury, hypothermia, dehydration, etc. Our walk Safety Policy and a Shoe Guide can be found on our SRC page.
Both groups with travel together in a pre-hired coach with a capacity of 44 people. The ticket fee is £9, which covers the cost of transport. We will meet on Sunday 26th March at 8:10 am in front of the main entrance to the Botanic Gardens, Glasgow. The coach will leave sharply at 8:30am so please ensure you are there on time. Our expected return to the Botanic Gardens is around 7:30 pm.
Sign-ups for this walk will open at 8:00 pm on Thursday 16th March and tickets will be given on a first-come-first-serve basis. Sign-ups will close at 8:00 pm on Friday 24th March, or when tickets have sold out. Please note tickets are only available to GUWS members of 2022/2023 and you must have a ticket from the SRC website to join us on this walk.
Important: If you have any medical conditions, injuries, or severe allergies we should be aware of, please notify us in advance of the trip. This information will be treated as strictly confidential.
Disclaimer: You would attend this event at your own risk, but the coordinators of the walk will as far as possible make sure that the walk is carried out in a safe manner. We will not employ qualified guides, leaders, or first aiders at this event, but the walk coordinators will have first aid kits, maps and other emergency and navigational equipment.
Cancellations: If you have a ticket and later realise you can’t make it, let us know ASAP via email or social media so that we can refund you and offer the ticket to the other members. We cannot offer refunds for cancellations within 48 hours of the start of the event. If you do not cancel your ticket and fail to show up without good reason, your details will be recorded and this will be taken into consideration for future walk sign-ups. There will not be a reserve list for this event but in case a space opens up after all tickets are sold, we will announce it on social media and via email.
