EGM REQUEST: Divestment Cannot Wait
We, the undersigned students of the University of Glasgow, request an Extraordinary General Meeting of the membership of the GUSRC to discuss the motion printed below.
The Student Body Believes
- That the Israeli government is committing a genocide in the Gaza strip, where according to one recent study published by the Lancet upwards of 180,000 people have been killed since October 2023.
- That GUSRC members have consistently demonstrated their resolute opposition to Israel’s crimes – be that through regular protests on campus or by electing Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sittah to be their rector with 80% of the vote.
- That Glasgow University holds considerable investments in arms companies whose weapons are widely believed to be used in the commission of war crimes.
This Student Body Further Believes
- That delays to divestment from the University’s shared in arms companies are intolerable to students, staff and the wider University community.
- That, following a complaint made by the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians to the Scottish Charity Regulator, continued delays to divestment detrimentally harm the institution’s reputation.
- That, amidst warning of potential criminal liability for investments held in arms companies operating in illegal Israeli settlements, the University of Glasgow should immediately de-risk.
Therefore, this Student Body Resolves:
- To pursue every available avenue which furthers the cause of arms divestment at the University of Glasgow.
- To organise and build for a significant student demonstration prior to the University Court’s next meeting.
- To refuse to accept any further delay in the divestment process.
