Overview

Our flagship cardiothoracic surgical skills course returns for a second cohort after an oversubscribed debut. Thirty delegates will work hands-on with Terumo Aortic grafts used in real operations, professional grade Wexler Surgical vascular instruments and Xenosys loupes from R&D Surgical, under 1:5 tutor supervision from a consultant-led aortic faculty. The evening opens with an introduction to aortic surgery and a patient story from ThinkAorta, followed by two hours of simulated ascending aortic replacement at the bench.

This is one of the only UK undergraduate workshops where students suture on real surgical graft material using the same instruments and optical loupes a consultant surgeon uses in theatre, with four tutors on the floor at a 1:5 ratio.
