In 2026 the Glasgow University Students’ Representative Council marks 140 years of student representation.
Since holding its first meeting on 9th March 1886, the SRC has played a central role in student life at the University of Glasgow – representing students, supporting wellbeing, helping foster communities, and creating opportunities for generations of students.
Over the past 140 years, thousands of students have shaped the SRC through their work on Council, in clubs and societies, student media, volunteering, and campaigns that have helped change the University community for the better.
Throughout the coming weeks and months, we’ll be celebrating that history, sharing stories from the past, and highlighting the students who continue to shape the University today.
What we’re doing
To mark this milestone, we’ll be running a series of activities and projects throughout the year. These include:
Glasgow Makes People

As part of the University's 575 Celebrations, the Library is hosting Glasgow Makes People: 575 Years of Student Life. The exhibition explores how generations of students have shaped the University through clubs and societies, activism, culture and community. We are proud to have contributed to the exhibition with images, stories and a short film from our President Duncan Calvert reflecting on the role of student representation today.
Location: University of Glasgow Library – Level 2 Exhibition Space
Dates: Opens 26 March 2026 (until March 2027)
As well as:
- Sharing stories from SRC history and student life through the decades
- Celebrating the impact of clubs, societies, student media and volunteers
- Highlighting the voices of students past and present
We’ll also be exploring archive material and working with alumni and student groups to uncover stories that reflect how student life at Glasgow has changed over time.
