At the SRC, we are committed to supporting student refugees and raising awareness of the challenges faced by people who have been displaced by conflict, persecution, or crisis.
Through our Volunteering service, we have partnered with local refugee support charities such as Scottish Refugee Council, Inclusive Homework Club, and Amina – The Muslim Women’s Resource Centre for several years.
Many students also engage with Student Action for Refugees (STAR), Solidaritee and other student-led groups supporting refugee communities across Glasgow.
The University of Glasgow holds University of Sanctuary status, recognising its commitment to supporting people who have been forced to leave their homes.
Over the past year, students and staff across the University community have also been highlighting areas where additional support is needed for students affected by conflict and displacement.
Through initiatives such as an open letter to University leadership and ongoing dialogue with staff and student groups, the SRC has been part of wider efforts to encourage stronger and more coordinated support for students facing exceptional circumstances.
Student Refugee Day provides an opportunity both to celebrate the resilience and contributions of refugee students and to continue conversations about how universities can better support those seeking sanctuary.
While Refugee Week is usually held in June, we are celebrating Student Refugee Day on 19 March so that more students can take part during the academic year.
What’s happening on Student Refugee Day?
We have worked closely with student groups and community partners to create a range of engaging and meaningful activities, where you can:
- Learn about the experiences of student refugees and the support available on campus and beyond.
- Take part in events that celebrate culture, resilience, and community.
- Reflect on what it means to leave home and bring a piece of it with you.
