What is a zine? *Pronounced [zeen]
It is a DIY magazine. All you need is pen(s), paper, a creative vision and occasionally a printer.
A zine can be any size and form
It can be about anything
Zines started as avant-garde little magazines in the 1920s and played a significant role during the Harlem Renaissance. They were popular in the 1930s in sci-fi fan cultures. In the 1960s-1970s, zines boomed, helping to build subcultural and countercultural communities.
Zines do not have editors: they welcome typos and celebrate unruly, unrefined artistic expression.
If you want to experiment with words and/or images, if you want to find and hone your voice as an artist
If you are a fan of collages or doodling, if you are tired of social media and online blogging
Or if you are just looking for a creative outlet
Zines may be a place for you
