Ready for a busy Semester Two? The SRC is here to help you make the most of it! 🎉

As your Students' Representative Council (SRC), we're here to support and represent you throughout your time at university.

This newsletter gives you a glimpse of what's happening this semester, from key events and important dates to the initiatives we're working on to improve your student experience.

We’re kicking off the year with a fantastic January Welcome, featuring a packed Welcome Fair, a Burns Night celebration, and much more!

What's On This Semester?

January Welcome (Jan 12th to 31st):
With a new year comes new opportunities, and that's what UofG Welcome is all about! 🌟

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) will be getting together with clubs and societies to host events to welcome you or welcome you back to the University of Glasgow!

Our events are open to all new and returning students at the University of Glasgow, with inclusivity at the heart of everything we do. We’ve got a packed line-up, including socials and mixers to meet new students, our Welcome Fair this Wednesday 11am – 4pm in the GUU, society collaborations, cultural events like Burns Night, and many more.

Spring Elections (Feb-March):
University life isn’t just about lectures and labs – it’s about making your voice heard and shaping your student experience 🗳️

Nominations open on February 9th for the GUSRC Spring Elections, with positions available for Academic Reps, Welfare and Equal Opportunities Officers, and four full-time Sabbatical roles. No experience is needed – just passion and ideas!

If you're not running, make sure to check out the candidate list, read the manifestos, and tune into the hustings (Mon 2nd & Tue 3rd March) before voting on Wed 4th & Thu 5th March.

SRC 140 & UofG 575 (March):
It’s our 140th birthday! 🎂

This year we are celebrating our 140th year since our foundation in 1886. Our official birthday falls on Monday 9th March 2026, so expect to see more info on activities opportunities to get involved in the coming weeks.

We are keen to celebrate the stories of the students and societies who have helped shape the SRC over the years, and tie in with the University’s 575 celebrations.

LGBTQ+ History Month (February):
This February, join us as we celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month and explore the vital role LGBTQ+ people have played in science, innovation, and discovery 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

From pioneering researchers and technologists to activists who challenged barriers in medicine, education, and research, we’ll highlight the stories of LGBTQ+ individuals whose ideas and innovations have shaped the world we live in – including contributions rooted in Glasgow and beyond.

Student Volunteering Week (February 16-20):
Looking to graduate with more than a degree? 🤔

Student Volunteering Week is your chance to connect with fantastic volunteering opportunities across Glasgow. We're celebrating our student volunteers and the positive impact they have on the community.

Each day has a different theme: Micro Monday, Transferable Skills Tuesday, Wellbeing Wednesday, Thankful Thursday, and Community Friday.

International Women's Week (March 8-15):
International Women’s Week (IWW) falls from the 8th – 15th of March 💜

This year’s theme is Give To Gain. Give To Gain centres on a simple idea: when we give our time, support, resources, and care, we help create the conditions for women and girls to thrive – and everyone benefits. Join us throughout the week for a programme of events, activities, and opportunities to Give To Gain gender equality together.

Student Teaching Awards (STAs):
It's our 16th Annual Student Teaching Awards! 🎈

Help us recognise amazing staff members and student representatives who have made a real difference. Nominations are open until 16th February, and the awards ceremony will be held on 28th March. Nominate your favourite teachers, staff members and student representatives and help us celebrate excellence in teaching!

Volunteering, Clubs & Societies (VCS) Awards:
These awards celebrate the fantastic contributions of our student volunteers, clubs, and societies! 🏆

From impactful events to inspiring collaborations, we want to recognise those who make our university community vibrant and inclusive. Nominations will open this Friday 16th January and will be close on 16th February. Show your appreciation and consider nominating!

Religious & Cultural Festivals:
We know that coming up soon are several key dates for many of our student communities 🕯️

Through our Community & Inclusion project, we are supporting societies and groups in their celebration of these festivals such as Ramadan, Holi, Nowruz, Ugadi, Eid-Al-Fitr, Passover, Vaisakhi, Spring Festival, Good Friday and Easter.

Please do get in touch with our Clubs & Socs team to discuss how we can support you with grant funding, room bookings and more.

SRC Priorities

This semester, we're continuing our work on several key areas:

  • Cost of Living Support: We're committed to ensuring that all students have access to the support they need during these difficult times. We're actively working with the University to improve the cost of living support available.
  • Student Wellbeing: Your mental and physical health is important to us. We offer a range of wellbeing services and resources, including advice and support, wellbeing workshops, and events.
  • Academic Representation: Through our elected Council, we’re here to ensure your academic interests are represented at all levels of the University.
     

Get Involved!

There are many ways to get involved with the SRC and make the most of your university experience:

  • Join a club or society: With over 350 clubs and societies, there's something for everyone.
  • Volunteer: Give back to the community and gain valuable experience and employability skills through our volunteering opportunities.
  • Access our support services: Our Advice Centre offers free, confidential, and impartial advice on a range of issues.
  • Stay connected: Download our app, visit our website, and follow us on social media @glasgowunisrc to stay up-to-date with the latest news and events.
