The University of Glasgow Darts Society fielded five players at the UDUK Scottish Championships in Edinburgh. The squad gained experience competing against Scotland’s best and is now arranging friendlies with Heriot-Watt and other universities.
Glasgow Darts Society Shows Grit at UDUK Scottish Championships
The University of Glasgow Darts Society made the trip to Edinburgh on November 15th to compete in the UDUK Scottish Championships, sending a five-strong contingent to represent the maroon and gold in what proved to be a fiercely competitive day of university darts.
Ross Clelland, Sid Ash, Will Moran, Rory McGurk, and Kai Sproull stepped up to the oche for Glasgow, each battling against some of the best university players from across Scotland and beyond. The team spirit was evident throughout the day, with the players supporting each other between matches and showing the determination that has come to define this season's Glasgow squad.
The standout performance of the day came from Kai Sproull, who produced some excellent darts to reach the quarter-finals of the singles competition. Kai's run demonstrated the quality developing within the Glasgow ranks and showed that our players can compete with the best in the Scottish university circuit. His composure under pressure and consistent scoring throughout his matches were particularly impressive, giving the squad real confidence heading into future competitions.
The championship itself saw Northumbria's Adam Scott claim the title in impressive fashion, defeating Newcastle's Oli Gibbon 5-2 in the final. Scott's performance was clinical, hitting three 140s and averaging 58 throughout his campaign to lift the trophy. The standard across the competition was exceptionally high, with several players posting averages in the mid-50s and numerous 180s recorded throughout the day.
While Glasgow didn't bring home silverware this time, the experience gained from competing at this level is invaluable for the society's development. The absence of regular players Andrew Hastings and James Prentice was certainly felt, but the five who made the journey showed plenty of heart and gave a good account of themselves against top-quality opposition.
Looking Ahead: Building Momentum
The Scottish Championships marked another important milestone in what has been a busy season for the Glasgow society, but there's no time to rest on laurels. The committee is actively working on arranging friendly fixtures against other Scottish universities, with Heriot-Watt among the institutions we're in discussions with. These friendlies will provide vital match practice and help strengthen the competitive bonds between Scottish university darts societies.
Additional fixtures against other local universities are also in the pipeline, which will give more members the opportunity to represent Glasgow in competitive matches and continue building the depth of experience across the squad. The society is keen to establish a regular calendar of friendly matches to complement the UDUK fixtures and internal tournaments.
Events like the Scottish Championships are crucial for Glasgow's darters to test themselves against the best in the university circuit and identify areas for improvement. The statistics and insights gathered from these competitions help inform training sessions and allow players to work on specific aspects of their game.
The society would like to thank everyone who represented Glasgow at the championships, with special congratulations to Kai Sproull for his excellent quarter-final run. The coaching staff and committee are proud of how all five players conducted themselves and the fighting spirit they showed throughout the day.
Regular practice sessions continue throughout the term at the union, and members are encouraged to attend to sharpen their skills ahead of upcoming fixtures. With dedication, continued improvement, and the benefit of competitive match experience through friendlies, Glasgow will be back challenging for honours at future UDUK events.
