Hello and welcome to the fourth Dead Poets Society newsletter. We hope you had a fantastic winter break and a happy new year! A warm welcome to all new and returning society members. A reminder that you can stay up-to-date with all Dead Poets-related news through our Instagram (gudeadpoets), the SRC webpage, or these newsletters (at the start of every month).
Our first event of the semester was a screening of the film ‘When Harry Met Sally’. Though sadly no longer streaming on iPlayer, the BBC published a recent article on the film: https://www.bbc.co.uk/culture/article/20190705-why-when-harry-met-sally-is-the-greatest-romcom-of-all-time. For further reading on the classic rom-com, we recommend The Atlantic’s retrospective article and a response from the blog Literate Ape, with links to both below:

We are excited to announce that our next event will be a Valentine’s Crafts Night on Thursday 12th February. Materials and snacks will be provided and the event will take place in Room 433B of the St Andrews Building at 18:00.
Later this month, we plan to run another Book Shop Crawl (weather-dependent!) in collaboration with the Book Society, and we are proud to be involved with the RAG (Raising and Giving) Pub Quiz to raise money for charity. In collaboration with the Alexandrian, Linguistics, Poetry & Scottish Literature Societies, the quiz will take place at 19:00, GUU Base Bar, on Monday 23rd February. More details are available on RAG’s Instagram and SRC pages.
Book Club will return in February with a discussion of ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Brontë, chosen by our Instagram followers based on the theme of vibey romance. The other novels in contention were ‘Cleopatra and Frankenstein’ by Coco Mellors, ‘The Cinnamon Bun Book Store’ by Laurie Gilmore and ‘Heated Rivalry’ by Rachel Reid, all worthy of a re-read or addition to your TBR pile. The discussion will take place at 18:00 on Thursday 26th February in JMS 733.
To preview 2026, the Dead Poets committee have compiled a list of Glasgow-based events coming later this year to add to your calendar. Glasgow Film Festival will return to the GFT and other movie venues around the city from February 25th to March 8th, while the Glasgow International Comedy Festival will run March 13th to 18th. Yardworks at SWG3 will celebrate street art and graffiti in early May. The annual TRNSMT music festival will run from June 19th to 21st and the Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow this year, from July 23rd to August 6th.
