Dead Poets Society Newsletter 3

Hello and welcome to the third Dead Poets newsletter! This will be our last update of the semester, but any urgent news or announcements will be added to our Instagram (gudeadpoets) and the SRC website. You can find our news articles and upcoming events by searching ‘Dead Poets’ on the site.

Last week, the DPS ran a museum trip to Kelvingrove with a scavenger hunt bingo competition leading attendees around the historic building. Congratulations to the winners and a reminder that the bingo card is still up on our Instagram if you’d like to fill it out on your own trip!

Our final event of the semester was a Crafts De-stress Night in collaboration with the Tea Society. We look forward to announcing our events for Semester 2 in January, so keep an eye on our Instagram and SRC page after the winter holiday.

Our Book Club discussion for November centred around ‘Fun Home’ by Alison Bechdel, which beat out other graphic novels - ‘Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands’ by Kate Beaton, ‘Persepolis’ by Marjane Satrapi and ‘The Many Deaths of Laila Starr’ by Ram V - as our pick of the month. Further graphic novel recommendations from the Book Club include ‘Gender Queer: A Memoir’ by Maia Kobabe and ‘Maus’ by Art Spiegelman. Our next Book Club will take place in January, with the theme and poll options to be revealed at the start of the next semester.

Finally, in the lead up to the Winter holiday, the Dead Poets committee have put together a list of recommendations to watch and read to get into the holiday spirit. The animated Christmas film ‘Klaus’ is available on Netflix, the heartfelt short film ‘An Almost Christmas Story’ is streaming on Disney+, and the Scotland-set zombie Christmas musical ‘Anna and the Apocalypse’ was filmed not far from Glasgow. Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel ‘Little Women’ can be downloaded free online, ‘‘The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse’ is a short book that combines beautiful artwork with a wholesome story, and ‘Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead’ is set against a cold, Wintery atmosphere.
