Hello and welcome to the first Dead Poets Society newsletter! The committee will be sending out twice-monthly updates on our events, book clubs and the occasional movie/TV/book recommendations.
The Dead Poets Society has already run a series of events this Autumn, starting with a popular (and now annual) screening of the film ‘Dead Poets Society’ at the Boyd Orr in September. In October, we collaborated with the Glasgow Uni Book Society on a Book Shop Crawl around Glasgow’s West End, which was unfortunately delayed due to severe weather warnings but proved popular once again. Earlier this week, the society took over the Williams Room at the SRC to screen a Halloween Movie Marathon, including the films ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’, ‘Host’ and the mystery movie, ‘Scooby-Doo! Frankencreepy’.
Coming up this Winter, the Dead Poets committee are busy planning our next events, including a Presentation Night where we invite anyone in attendance to share a PowerPoint they’ve made, no matter how short or silly. Presenting is not required, though we do encourage everyone to get creative and send us their presentations (or bring them on a USB stick!) before the event, which will take place on Thursday 13th November at 18:00 in St Andrews Building room 432. Later in the month we will be leading an interactive trip to the Kelvingrove Museum (Nov 25th) and our last event this semester will be a Crafts Night for exam de-stress (Dec 2nd).. More details will be given on Instagram and in our next newsletter about these events, so stay tuned and we look forward to seeing you there!
Our October Book Club discussion, centred on ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’, has been postponed to 18:00 on Thursday 6th November and will take place in JMS 745. We apologise for the last minute change of plans, but both committee members leading the Book Club were sadly unable to attend.
The November pick for the Book Club will be the graphic novel ‘Fun Home’ by Alison Bechdel, as selected by our Instagram followers. The discussion is open to anyone, regardless of whether or not they have a society membership or read the book, and will take place at 18:00 on Thursday 27th November in Molema 429. All of our Book Club discussions going forward will take place at the same time & location on the last Thursday of the month.
