About

Glasgow University Ultimate, known as FarFlung, prides itself on being a club that offers team sport to all while still competing at the highest national level and offering a great social scene!

Ultimate (or Ultimate Frisbee) is a non-contact team sport played with a flying disc on a field or indoor pitch. The aim of the game is to score points by passing the disc to a player in the opposing end zone, but players may not run while holding the disc. Unlike almost all other team sports, ultimate does not have a referee and is instead self-officiated, relying on each player's sense of sportsmanship and fair play, known as the Spirit of the Game. All of this makes ultimate a fast-paced, fun, tactical, and respectful game - even when played at the highest level!

We enter teams into all divisions (Open*, Women's, and Mixed) at both indoor and outdoor tournaments at all levels of experience, from freshers' tournaments to UK nationals. Almost all members join as complete beginners, so if you’re looking for a new, welcoming sport, come and play ultimate!

Regularly some of our members go on to compete nationally and internationally within a year or two of playing ultimate, while others join the club for recreation. Each week we have both split and mixed gender training; a social, with a wide variety of socials throughout the year; fitness, and other events. We strive for inclusivity in all we do. You're so welcome at FarFlung.

Come find us on our public Instagram, private Instagram (for all our weekly details!), Facebook Page, and our TikTok!

*The Open division is for players who do not qualify for or choose not to compete in the Women's division.

Competitive

For committed members there is the opportunity to train with our competitive squad. This squad training is for players eager to succeed in regional and national indoor and outdoor competitions. If you want to play competitively, our captains are always on the lookout to invite keen and improving players to our competitive squad. In the 2023-24 season both our women’s and open team qualified for division 1 outdoor nationals.

Recreational

If you are new to frisbee or prefer to play on a more laidback recreational level, we have a development team that focuses largely on developing basic skills and playing games for fun. Development team members can play in the many beginners', regional, and 'hat' (fun) tournaments that will be offered throughout the season and are an integral part of the club!

Socials

Here at Flung we love socials, and we host them every Wednesday. These include a wide variety of activities such as family socials, subcrawls, joint socials with other clubs, games nights, potlucks, and more! We typically alternate weekly between pub nights and more specific themed events, including sober socials.

Membership

£50 for the year or £30 for one semester. This includes access to all club training, fitness, socials, a free disc, and discounted tournament costs. We don't want finance to be a barrier for anyone joining the club. GUSA offers a hardship fund to enable access to sport, please get in touch if you need to apply for this.

Insurance

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance cover for any activity you take part in. Upon joining, please check the level of insurance cover we, as a club, provide to you.

GUSA recommends that all students playing high risk sport, go abroad to compete/train, or are playing in governing body leagues, may want to consider/need to take out personal liability insurance, or join the sports governing body to be covered. Some insurance providers also offer specialist sports cover.
