About

Glasgow University Sailing Club was founded in 1912. We are a very active society and there are many diverse ways to get involved

From fleet racing and team racing in dinghies (Fireflies), to fleet racing, match racing and two social cruises on yachts each year, as well a multitude of socials for both sailors and enthusiastic social members. Beginners are welcome to try sailing in dinghies or yachts, and to get involved in our weekly Wednesday night socials!

Competitive

Team racing in dinghies is currently the most active part of the club and we have been very successful competitively in both dinghies and yachts over the past few years. We enter three dinghy teams in the Scottish Student Sailing leagues each season, and regularly travel south to England to enter open events. Dinghy teams train weekly on Saturdays at Bardowie Loch, and events are held over weekends.

Recreational

Our Beginners session is held on Wednesday afternoons at Bardowie. These sessions are open to all, for those who have never been in a boat before, or perhaps those wanting to get back into the sport. We offer instruction by RYA qualified dinghy instructors and there is always safety boat cover when we are afloat. Open sailors can sail the fireflies used for racing and our new fleet of beginners’ boats is ideal for those learning to tack and gybe.

Training

Wednesday afternoon sessions are generally for recreational sailors, beginners or open sailing members; however we occasionally train as teams in the run up to big events on a Wednesday. Most teams training is held on a Saturday, but this can change depending on coach availability and the weather forecast.

Socials

We like a good old dress up at GUSC and have socials every Wednesday evening. Some key nights to look out for might be the StrathSail X GUSC Subcrawl, Cheese and Wine Night, Flat safari, and the Watersports Ceilidh. We also run sober events and meet up in the day at the gym, to study or just have a coffee and a chat

Additonal Info

Each year the club hosts the Glasgow Grouse, a competitive annual team racing league event in October which usually involves over 20 teams. Open to both university and open teams it is an intense weekend on the water as well as a ceilidh on the Saturday night. Definitely not to be missed. If you have any questions about how to get involved with GUSC please send us and email
