Glasgow University Mountaineering Club (GUMC) is one of the largest – and certainly most active – sports clubs at the University.
Whether you’re into Hillwalking, scrambling, rock-climbing, ice-climbing, wild swimming, skiing… If it’s outdoors, we do it! We go away every fortnight to a community hall somewhere in Scotland or further afield; planning trips out and taking part in fun antics in the outdoors. If you’re interested in seeing the Highlands, we’re the club to join. Some of the biggest perks of joining the club is you get free access to our club gear store, subsidised access to skills courses and access to free guides and instructors to help develop your skills. We also have a large and friendly indoor bouldering community which competes at various university competitions such as BUCS and the Glasgow Taxis Cup.
We have 2 Competitive Teams
The club is largely recreational – mountaineering is a noncompetitive sport! We’re open to all levels, especially beginners!
We have informal bouldering sessions on Monday evenings at TCA Newsroom and Wednesday afternoons at TCA Propstore (close to Murano) – pop by and spot the GUMC T-shirts if you fancy a chat! Each year our top climbers have a chance to compete at BUCS and other competitons – speak to a committee member if you want more info about this.
We hold a casual social at 8pm every Wednesday evening at Dram! on Woodlands Road - this is also where sign-up takes place for each meet, every fortnight. It’s a great place to meet other club members and get extra info about the club, look forward to seeing you there! We also have other social events throughout the year, such as ceilidhs, pub crawls and potlucks. Join our social media pages to get more updates.
Come along to our Cheese and Wine evening in September to hear more about our adventures and become a member! If you miss this, you can still join at any point in the year – just keep an eye on our socials for more info.
