About

The Hares & Hounds is the University of Glasgow's road and cross-country running club. For over 100 years it has brought together runners of all abilities

Competitive

The club has frequent opportunities for racing throughout the year at road, cross-country, and hill races. We've seen significant success recently - often picking up team medals at competitions thanks to the great depth within our club. We are also lucky enough to count multiple national champions amongst our membership - with some of our members even being selected to run for Team GB! As well as racing National & West District races through the year, we also compete in BUCS cross-country, which has over recent years seen the club travelling to London, Swansea, and Leeds to compete. This is open to all our members and is a great chance to experience one of the highlights of the year’s racing calendar! Glasgow now has a Running Endurance Academy which can offer specialist support to high-performing runners. For more information on this you can contact Calum Hill (calum.hill@glasgow.ac.uk) who is the Performance Sport Manager at GUSA.

Recreational

All of our training sessions are open to all members. We have 3, 5, and 8km groups at our easy miles which means that there is something for everyone, and there’s no better way to destress from classes than a chatty jog around the west end. Our 3km groups are led by our Welfare & Jogging convenors who make sure that nobody is left behind! Our coached interval sessions are also super accessible and open to all. They’re a great way to get faster and can help build your confidence if you fancy giving racing a go!

Racing is something we encourage everyone to try, regardless of experience or ability. Many of our racing members had never tried it before starting uni, but now come along to almost every race! Even if you’ve never raced before you can be sure to have a great time with lots of support from the rest of the club. Races are always followed up by smelly pints (or non-alcoholic alternatives!) and scran, which are a brilliant way to celebrate the day’s running with the rest of the club!

Training

The club trains Monday-Thursday, with easy miles on Mondays and Wednesdays, and coached sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All training starts at 17:30 outside the entrance to the Stevenson Building (University gym). All you need to bring is a pair of running trainers and some good chat! Our Hill Running Convenor also organises hill runs throughout the year. Our training isn't compulsory, and you are free to come to whichever session(s) suit you best and go at your own pace. With so many members, there’s always someone there to match you!

Socials

Hares & Hounds is a great way to make new friends at our frequent socials. We have many nights out throughout the year which are always great fun, and range widely from ceilidhs to sub-crawls, flat crawls, and even a running pub crawl! On top of this we also have an annual alumni ball which is a great excuse to get dressed up smart and out of the running gear for once. We also have several trips away each year: there’s a fantastic weekend away in the Scottish countryside early in Semester 1 and we also have a massive night out in Edinburgh after the Braid's Hill Race. At the end of Semester 2, there is an always exciting warm-weather training trip abroad which has in recent years seen the club visiting Spain and Portugal. These are unique experiences which really stand out in the year’s social calendar.

Additional Info

Come along to our freshers' run & social at the start of the year to find out more about the club, or if you can't make that then feel free to pop along to any of our runs through the year to find out more!
