Volunteering Agreement

Students who volunteer, lead student activities such as clubs and societies, or fulfil a representative role with GUSRC help shape and define the student experience for everyone at the University of Glasgow.

The below agreement is not intended as a legally binding contract. Instead, it sets out what volunteers can expect from GUSRC, what their responsibilities are, and how they are expected to behave and represent themselves, their peers and the University.

Every volunteer is provided with an electronic copy of this agreement upon registration as a GU Volunteer, before undertaking activities. It is made available via each student’s personal volunteering profile.

Volunteers have a right to:

  • be treated with respect.

  • never be discriminated.

  • know who is responsible for their support.

  • fulfil their role in a safe environment.

  • regular contact with and advice from relevant staff members.

  • never be used to replace the work of paid staff.

  • receive and request an induction and ongoing training, as necessary.

  • be trusted with confidential information if it is relevant to their position.

  • be informed about what is going on in the organisation.

Volunteers are expected to:

  • treat others with respect.

  • represent the GUSRC and the University of Glasgow in a professional manner.

  • perform their role to the best of their ability.

  • undertake the activities outlined in their role description.

  • follow all the Union’s rules, policies, and procedures.

  • respond to emails within a reasonable timeframe.

  • attend training offered for their role.

  • request any support materials within a reasonable time.

  • always maintain confidentiality.

  • provide the GUSRC with feedback when requested.

GUSRC is expected to:

  • provide insurance for activities so long as correct policy and procedures have been followed.

  • treat volunteers with respect.

  • support volunteers in conducting risk assessments.

  • provide training, support and resources when requested within a reasonable timeframe.

  • deliver any materials or support on time, as agreed with volunteers.

  • investigate complaints as soon as practically possible, keeping volunteers informed.

  • recognise volunteers for their work and commitment.

Additional

Volunteering Opportunities

We seek and sustain relationships with local charities, social enterprises, and neighbourhood projects. These partnerships offer a diverse range of volunteering opportunities, and we link them with students who can make a genuine difference, through the application of their energies, skills and interests which are honed at the University.

Most of our opportunities are run by our partners. And although we are assured of the safety of their activities and processes, it is equally important that students take responsibility for staying safe and asking the right questions.

Other Guidance

GUSRC has prepared additional guidance which we advise volunteers and club and society members review.  Our Covid-19 Ready document for volunteers and Risk Assessment for clubs and societies can be found here, or on request.

The University of Glasgow also has its own Code of Student Conduct, which you can find via their website.

Help

If you need advice, support, or wish to discuss matters relating to the Volunteering Agreement – or other issues concerning volunteering, clubs and societies – contact us in confidence via enquiries@src.gla.ac.uk.

Thank You

We really appreciate all our students stepping forward to give of themselves, to teach others and learn new skills for the betterment of our neighbours and community. We hope you find it a satisfying, challenging, and rewarding experience. Thank you.
