Overview

Our Mind Your Mate training programme is a three-hour student-led workshop, developed in collaboration with Two Roads CIC; an award-winning not-for-profit social enterprise that develops and delivers training to improve emotional health and safety.

Mind Your Mate and its accompanying workshop, Mind Yourself, form part of our aim to build a community of Mental Health Champions, reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, and cut down the barriers that prevent people from accessing the help and support they need.

The overall objective of our programme is to help participants develop basic suicide prevention skills. It explains the boundaries that keep everyone safe. Our role is to help those at risk to engage with professional help, not to try and provide that help ourselves.

CW: To help someone who is at risk of suicide we need to talk about suicide risk, and so we will be talking unemotionally about suicide risk throughout the programme. If at any time you find this distressing, you may withdraw from the programme and are always welcome to complete it another time.

The training programme is structured as follows:

Myths and Facts around Suicide

Group exercise covering many of the most common myths around suicide.

Section 2

Emotional Resilience and Depression

What is resilience, and why is it so important.
Protective and risk factors.
Clinical depression.
Recovery from depression – what works?

Section 3

Depression and Suicide Risk

What is suicide?
The five elements of the suicidal mind.
Why would someone consider suicide?
How can we reduce suicide risk – World Health Organisation.
Can we save someone?
Why might someone not ask for help?
Why might someone not try to help?

Section 4

Safely helping someone using the Look, Listen, and Link model

Look, Listen, Link model.
Look for the signs – IS PATH WARM FOR.
Listen and ask – active listening model.
Link to the help that is available – crisis, serious concern, or needs help.

Our workshops are free for all University of Glasgow students and staff to attend, either online or in-person. Upon successful completion of our Mind Your Mate and Mind Yourself workshops, you will receive a completion certificate signed-off by the University’s Chief Operating Officer, acknowledging your status as a University Mental Health Champion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is talking about suicide dangerous?

Research indicates strongly that people become suicidal because of unbearable pain – it is not the word suicide. Evidence is clear that allowing someone to talk about their suicidal thoughts is likely to reduce the immediate risk.

What is the difference between suicide prevention and suicide intervention?

Suicide intervention is necessary when someone is intending to hurt themselves. Suicide prevention happens earlier; helping to link someone to professional support can stop someone becoming suicidal.

Will I be asked to introduce myself and why I am attending?

No. Nobody is asked who they are or why they are attending the programme. Participants can observe and listen, or they can participate more actively in the exercises; it is totally up to the participant.

Is the programme upsetting?

The programme content is factual and delivered in a calm manner. Personal disclosure is avoided wherever possible. Very occasionally a participant may become upset, due to having experienced the suicide of someone close.

Is the programme suitable for someone who has suicidal thoughts?

If you believe someone is at risk of suicide, please bring them to their doctor or hospital as soon as possible; do not leave them on their own. The programme will explain to participants how they can access help but it is not a substitute for immediate professional support.

Will I be asked any direct questions?

No, all questions are asked of the whole group and participants can answer if they wish.

Will I be asked to participate in any role-plays?

No – there are no role-plays in the training programme.

Can I save someone from suicide?

Not every suicide is preventable. However, in most cases, the risk of suicide can be reduced by linking the person with suicidal thoughts to the professional help they need. That is our role and the core of our training – identifying that someone is at risk, letting them talk and linking them to the help they need.

The Association of Women Surgeons Glasgow is delighted to bring back Battle of the Surgical Specialties for its 3rd year, hosted at the Glasgow University Union, Dining Room!

We'll be welcoming five consultant surgeons from different specialties, each taking to the stage to make the case for their own field. This year's line-up includes:

- Neurosurgery - Mr Roddy O'Kane

- Cardiothoracic surgery - Ms Jennifer Whiteley

- Trauma and orthopaedics - Miss Samantha Downie

- General/ breast surgery - Miss Judith Reid

Each surgeon will deliver a brief presentation, sharing insights into their career path and the unique aspects of their specialty.

After the presentations, we’ll take a short break before diving into a Q&A panel, where you’ll have the chance to ask any burning questions and gain valuable advice.

Members of the Malt Whisky Society will guide you on a flavourful journey across the unique regions, offering the opportunity to explore the unique characteristics and distilling history behind each dram.

You may experience a Lowland whisky, known for its smooth, floral notes and subtle sweetness. Or perhaps a Speyside with its sherried notes, or a Highland to capture the bold, malty character with notes of oak and heather. This 90-minute tour follows the same route as our standard Campus Tours, but with extra time built in for a more relaxed pace, regular breaks and opportunities to sit down along the way.

You’ll pick up insider tips, discover handy shortcuts, and learn the easiest ways to get to the library, gym and other key spots on campus.

If you've been matched through our Buddy Scheme this year, this one's especially for you, but honestly, it's open to absolutely everyone, buddy or no buddy, so don't let that hold you back from coming along.

We know starting uni (or navigating another year of it) can feel overwhelming at times, which is exactly why we set up the Buddy Scheme in the first place: to make sure no one has to figure it all out alone. Whether you're an incoming student who's been paired with a returning "big sister" to help you settle in, or a returning student who signed up to be that friendly face for someone new, this lunch is your chance to actually sit down together, put faces to names, and start building a friendship that (hopefully) lasts well beyond freshers week.

So here's how it works: head to Pappas Pasta at one of our scheduled time slots and enjoy a relaxed, no-pressure lunch with your buddy. Not been matched, or your buddy can't make it? No worries at all, come along solo and you'll be seated with other Her Campus members in exactly the same boat. Some of the best friendships start over a shared plate of pasta with someone you've just met.

Your ticket price covers a pasta/brunch item of your choice from the menu. If you're feeling like treating yourself a bit more, dessert, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, smoothies and sides are all available on the day for a small additional cost, but they're entirely optional.

This is a low-key, come-as-you-are kind of event. There's no pressure to know exactly what to say or how to fill the silence. Grab a seat, order your food, and let the conversation happen naturally. Ask about their course, their hometown, their go-to comfort show, what they're most nervous or excited about this year. You might just find your new go-to lunch buddy, a friendly face to sit with in lectures, or someone to explore Glasgow with on the weekends.

Join the GU Jet Lag Society in our first game of the year. We'll introduce the rules from the official Jet Lag: The Home Game - Hide & Seek. Based off the popular children's game, this version takes it to a whole new level, as you hide in various locations across the West End of Glasgow. The rules are easy to pick up, and you'll be joined by experienced members of our society, who will guide you through the process of the game.

The game will be completely free to play and open to all students at the University of Glasgow (new and old). Now is the time to try playing one of our games, especially if you've ever been worried about concerns like the time commitment or cost of public transport. This is also a great way to meet new people at the University, while you explore its campus and the surrounding area.

This is event is free to all and no ticket is required - just turn up. We will meet at the advertised time and location, however if you turn up late please contact us and we can fit you into a game (email us, message our instagram, or join our discord).

How do you play the game?

Each team will have an experienced member from the society to fully explain the rules to you.

But in brief, the game works with two teams. One team has a head start to find a street to hide on. Once released, the other teams (the seekers) can ask certain questions to narrow down the first team's hiding spot such as "Are you within 1km of us", "Is your nearest Library the same as ours?" or "Send a photo of the tallest building on your street".

Each time a question is asked, the hiding team can draw a card. The cards include time bonuses (e.g +5 minutes), action cards (e.g duplicate a card), and curse cards. Each curse card has a challenge which the hiders can make the seeking team complete (E.g the seekers can only turn right at any junction). Using these cards, the hiders can strategically slow down the seekers and increase their hiding time.

Eventually the hiders will be found, at which point the teams swap roles and play again. The team with the longest hiding time wins.

Games will begin shortly after everyone assembles at 14:00 on Friday morning. Please meet outside the Wolfson Medical School. Hide & Seek entails a lot of standing around or walking for extended periods of time. The game is out in the environment, therefore we are unable to guarantee access to seating, toilets etc. Nonetheless adjustments can be made to games to make it easier for you such as mandated game breaks or enforcing a no-running rule.

Where do I get a ticket/sign up? No ticket is required for this game. Just turn up on the day!

What is Jet Lag: The Game? Jet Lag: The Game is an online TV show that plays this style of game on a country (or even larger) scale! Think Hide & Seek across the UK, or Tag across Europe. If you've never heard of or watched the show, do not worry! The Jet Lag Society is open to everyone who wants to play our games.

Do I need to be a student of the University of Glasgow? The GU Jet Lag Society is always open to members from outside the University, and such members are very welcome to participate in our many games throughout the semester. However this particular event is geared towards students at the University of Glasgow, as it features during the University's Welcome Week.

Can I bring friends? Of course! You can choose to be in the same team, or opposing. There is also no pressure to turn up with anyone else. There will be teams to assign you in no matter what. Please note that large groups may not be able to fit in the same team and may have to be split up.

What should I bring? We strongly recommend you bring a bottle of water and some snack. Please also pack for Scottish weather. It may be lovely September weather, but we cannot guarantee that. Finally a battery pack is also recommended, although not a necessity.

How will teams communicate? All game communication happens through our Discord. You’re welcome to join it, but this is not required as the experienced member of your team will handle all the communication.

Session Guidelines

Doors open at 19:00, it is mandatory that you are seated for prompt start by 19:15. Arriving later than 19:15 will result in denied entry!

Wear comfortable clothes for sitting cross legged on the floor. Kindly bring an extra pair of socks to the session. If you would like, you can bring a cushion/mat to sit on for comfort (this is optional). There are some seats for those who are unable to sit on the ground.

There will be short videos made of the class for our Instagram advertisement The sessions follow a rough schedule of: discussing an aspect of meditation, followed by a guided meditation, followed by a QnA!

Need to kit out your flat or just fancy a browse through the homeware aisles? The SRC is running free return buses to Braehead IKEA – perfect for stocking up on essentials, snapping up bargains, or adopting a Djungelskog.

Three buses will depart at 10am, 11am and 12pm, with space for 45 people on each. You’ll have 1 hour 30 minutes to explore IKEA before we bring you back to campus.

Space is limited, so arrive early to secure your seat. If you miss the first bus, you can join the next one(subject to availability) or we can direct you to other methods of reaching IKEA via public transport.

This event is not ticketed. If we reach capacity, a “one in, one out” system will be in place. You do not need to be a member of the Disabled Students Society to attend.
